At the Post-Election Potluck Dinner we had at the Indiana Unitarian Universalist Church Tuesday, November 12, there was a great deal more served up than a fantastic array of food. It was a time for the 60+ attendees to reflect on how we and the Indiana County Democratic Committee can move forward considering the gut punch we all experienced after the last election.
ICDC Chair, Lynne Alvine, led a discussion on ideas for future actions by the local party, the need to find local candidates to run against Republican incumbents, the desire to keep fighting, getting back in the game, finding rays of hope, and more. Campaign field director, Eric Barker, shared a treasure trove of statistics both highly encouraging and hopeful while also weaknesses in various results.
Former local baker and now life coach, Jean-Ives Boulard, shared plans of offering sessions via Zoom on Thursday nights. They will be group sessions geared to dealing with the grief many are feeling and how to cope with the reality of the local political climate. More information will be posted as soon as possible on how you can sign up for those, starting Thursday, November 14.
As a closing exercise sending people home with a positive outlook for the days and weeks ahead, ICDC Vice Chair, Hank Knerr. The task was posed as, “In three words or less, after talking with your friends here tonight and the stories shared, what will motivate you to re-commit to the good fight?” Here are the responses:
Local Elections Matter
There Is Hope
Understand Why
What Else?
Share Stuff
Shop Blue
Recognize Everyone
Educate
Try New Groups
Give a Damn
Regularly Communicate
Love Your Neighbor
Calm, Concerned Language
Live Without Fear
And in closing, we are the leaders we have been waiting for. Go forth and do good.
And stay tuned here and on Facebook for more actions by the ICDC Executive Commitee from the many suggestions made at this meeting, and designed to move us forward.
